When Mother Duck's eggs finally hatch, one duckling emerges who is wobbly, awkward—and unlike the others, very ugly. No matter how hard he tries to fit in, the other animals mock him.
While his siblings chirp, peck, and waddle with ease, he struggles with even the simplest tasks. Feeling lonely and outcast, he leaves the safety of the farm and wanders through different places, hoping to find where he belongs.
Along the way, he meets other animals who suggest different ways of being: be strong, be funny, be aloof—but none of these feel right. One day he sees a flock of wild swans—beautiful, graceful, belonging—and though he admires them, he believes he’ll never be like them.
But with time, things change. The duckling discovers strength in being himself, and in a stunning transformation realizes who he is meant to be. He becomes a swan—and finally finds acceptance, both in himself and in others.
